Marcus H. Rosenmüller was born in Tegernsee in 1973. From 1995 to 2002, he studied at the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF München), in the Film and Television Drama department.
His feature film “Wer früher stirbt, ist länger tot” (“Grave Decisions,” 2006), for which he also co-wrote the screenplay with Christian Lerch, marked his breakthrough and won four Lolas at the German Film Awards. Starting in 2006, he created the successful “Tandern Trilogy”: “Beste Zeit” (“Good Times,” 2007), “Beste Gegend” (“The Best Place to Be,” 2008), and the concluding installment “Beste Chance,” shot in Upper Bavaria and India in 2013. Between 2006 and 2014, Rosenmüller directed numerous theatrical films. He subsequently brought the sweeping sports epic “Trautmann” (“The Keeper,” 2018), starring David Kross, and the family entertainment comedy “Unheimlich perfekte Freunde” (“Double Trouble and the Magical Mirror,” 2019) to cinemas. He also directed the documentary “Dreiviertelblut – Weltraumtouristen” (2020). Rosenmüller co-wrote Joseph Vilsmaier’s final directorial work, “Der Boandlkramer und die ewige Liebe” (2021), starring Bully Herbig and Hape Kerkeling, among others. His first animated feature, “Rotzbub” (“Welcome to Siegheilkirchen,” 2021), co-directed with Santiago Lopez Jover, also celebrated its world premiere that year. A year later came the comedy “Beckenrand Sheriff” (“Lifeguard Off Duty,” 2022), starring Milan Peschel, along with his work on the series “Neue Geschichten vom Pumuckl,” for which he received the Blauer Panther – TV & Streaming Award (formerly the Bavarian Television Award) in 2024. With “Pumuckl und das große Missverständnis” (2025), Rosenmüller scored his second million-admission box office success after “Wer früher stirbt, ist länger tot.” Most recently, his comedy “Extrawurst” (“The Holy Grill”), starring Hape Kerkeling, Christoph Maria Herbst, Fahri Yardim, Anja Knauer, and Friedrich Mücke, became the biggest success of his career to date, with nearly two million admissions.
Alongside his passion for film, Rosenmüller is regularly drawn to the stage: since 2007, he has toured Germany with composer Gerd Baumann performing his own poetry; from 2013 to 2017 he directed the traditional political satire revue (“Singspiel”) at Munich’s Nockherberg Starkbierfest, and in 2016 he directed Rossini’s opera “Le Comte Ory” at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. For his literary work, he received the City of Munich’s Ernst Hoferichter Prize in 2014, an award honoring writers whose work combines originality with cosmopolitanism and humor; that same year, he was awarded the Bavarian Constitution Medal in Silver. In 2015, the Munich literary society “Turmschreiber” presented him with the Poetentaler.
Since October 2018, Rosenmüller has held a professorship at the University of Television and Film Munich in the field of feature and television film, and he is a founding partner of Lieblingsfilm GmbH.
