Johannes Schmid

Director | Scriptwriter

Born 1973 in Lower Bavaria. Johannes studied Theatre and Film Studies, German Studies and Art History in Erlangen and Munich from 1995 to 2001. He worked as assistant and assistant director for numerous theatre and film projects while studying. Johannes has been working as a freelance director for film and theatre since 2000.
He made his feature film debut as writer and direct or with “Blöde Mütze!” in 2006 with the film production company „schlicht und ergreifend Film“ of whom he is a founding member. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival 2007 and has received several national and international awards. It was shown in German cinemas in 2008/2009. Filming for his second feature film “Wintertocher”, a German-Polish co-production finished in January/February 2010. The film was screened at several festivals and received a number of awards before it started in German cinemas in autumn 2011. In May 2012 “Wintertochter” was awarded the German Film Award in the category “Best Children’s Film”.
His romantic drama AGNES, based on the novel of the same name by Peter Stamm and highly praised by the feature pages, was shown in cinemas nationwide in 2016. This was followed in 2022 by the Austrian-German family film GESCHICHTEN VOM FRANZ, based on the books by Christine Nöstlinger, and the sequel NEUE GESCHICHTEN VOM FRANZ in 2023 due to its great cinema success. In addition to his film work, Johannes Schmid has directed spoken and musical theater throughout Europe for, among others, the Bayerische Staatsschauspiel, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Salzburg Festival, the Theater Sankt Gallen, and the Stadsteater in Malmö.
