Philipp Budweg, born in Munich in 1972, studied German Studies and Art History at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. As a producer he works across cinema, television and serial formats, and across genres: from children’s and family films to literary adaptations and fiction for adult audiences.

In 2000 he founded the production company schlicht und ergreifend GbR with Johannes Schmid. In 2008 this became schlicht und ergreifend Film GmbH, together with Thomas Blieninger and the directors Marcus H. Rosenmüller, Stefan Betz and Johannes Schmid; Robert Marciniak joined in 2010, and a year later the company took on its present name, Lieblingsfilm GmbH.

He received the VGH stipend for young producers and won the VGH-Award for Best New Producer at the Bavarian Film Awards in 2004 for AUS DER TIEFE DES RAUMES.

In children’s and youth film he is one of Germany’s most versatile and prolific producers; since Blöde Mütze! (2006) he has made fifteen feature films for children, both literary adaptations and original stories. His greatest box-office successes came with two trilogies: the ‘Gemstone’ trilogy after Kerstin Gier’s novels (Ruby Red, Sapphire Blue and Emerald Green) and three Andreas Steinhöfel adaptations, The Pasta Detectives, featuring Rico and Oskar. Three of his children’s films won the German Film Award for Best Children’s Film: Wintertochter, The Pasta Detectives and Mountain Miracle; What the Finn?! received the Golden Slipper main award at the Zlín Film Festival.

His work extends well beyond children’s cinema: with Agnes he produced a literary adaptation for adult audiences, alongside television work such as Tatort – Kehraus, Familie is nich and Forever Us. He is currently developing arthouse films, further literary adaptations and an animated series. A member of the German and European Film Academies since 2012, he saw his latest production, the feature film Horse on a Stick (Pferd am Stiel) by Sonja Maria Kröner, open in German cinemas in April 2026.
